African Catholics in the United States to Convene for their Annual Gathering
Under the sponsorship of the Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church (SCDC) of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), the Sub Committee on Pastoral Care of Migrants, Refugees and Travelers (PCMRT), the National Association of African Catholics in the United States (NAACUS), the Africans Organizations and friends of the Catholic Church in Africa, there will be an event on September 19-21, 2008 in Washington, DC that will serve as a platform for worship and reflection on the role and influence of African Catholics in the local Church.

As we witness ever changing and perplexing moments in the history of the United States which is increasingly becoming "A Nation of Immigrants", we make great efforts to understand the challenges and opportunities inherently present in the intricacy of diversity in the Church and society. African Catholics and their friends will spend a few days exploring the meaning and implications of being Catholic within a multicultural society and the type of actions necessary to promote and sustain such an environment.

African Catholics will have the opportunity to share thoughts and reflections on the influence their cultures have in the Church in the United States, talk about their present and future role in the Church and listen to the thoughts of several prelates from Africa and the United States. The gathering will also be a medium for the National Association of African Catholics to sensitize their friends and the Catholic Hierarchy about its presence, needs and future aspirations.

Approximately 150 participants are expected to be in attendance at the different gatherings and close to 1000 at the Eucharistic celebration at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

The Ninth Annual Convention of the African Conference of Catholic Clergy and Religious in the United States (ACCCRUS) will be held from August 7-10, 2008, at the Homewood Hotel, 17400 South Halsted Street, Homewood, IL 60430; Phone: (708) 957-1600. The theme of this year's conference is "Priestly and Religious Life as Counter-Cultural Witnessing". The conference is expected to attract several priests and sisters from around the country and mother land Africa. Our speakers will be Bishop Edward Braxton of Belleville Diocese, IL and His Eminence Peter Cardinal Turkson of Cape Coast, Ghana.

The ACCCRUS convention affords the African Priests and Religious the opportunity to experience the supportive network of communal socialization and through it generate resources and share ideas that can help them maximize their opportunities in the direction of ministerial effectiveness.
